Searching for Warmer Weather!

We left NC for Camp Gulf in Destin, FL searching for warmer weather and time away from the flu which was rampant in NC. While there, we had cold nights, cold days, but beautiful sunsets and days.

We left NC Sunday to find even warmer weather and are now in Pine Island in Saint James City, near Fort Myers, Florida. We drove down Sunday in teaming rain from Charlotte to Starke, FL. It was a 420 mile trip which took about 7 hours. We’ve learned to eat sandwiches I’ve preprepared while we stop at gas stations; killing two birds with one stone. The road down wasn’t too bad; there’s construction everywhere but it was limited on the trip. The Starke KOA was amazing. It was right off highway 301 but wasn’t noisy from the traffic. Oftentimes, our campsites are too far off the beaten path and end up taking us a long time to reach, making the trip longer than necessary. Not so here. The pool was great and there were even street lights around the campsite. Bathrooms and laundry were clean and the store had lots of unusual items. There was even a rentable fire pit which I haven’t seen before.

When we left Charlotte it was 32 degrees and they were calling for snow. We arrived in Starke and it was 60 degrees. The camper went through such extreme temperature changes that there was condensation EVERYWHERE in the camper. I thought we had experienced a roof leak because it was so wet in the camper. I was terrified that we had a huge problem. The roof wasn’t wet but some of the sides, the floor, the refrigerator, etc. were really wet. We pulled out the towels and turned on the heat and fireplace and began wiping things down. What an experience!!! Today all is fine but that was quite the scare.

My view for most of the trip. Pouring rain for 7 hours.

KOA in Starke, Florida.

Today we drove the last 250 miles of our trip to reach Pine Island, KOA in Saint James City which is near Fort Myers, FL. The weather was beautiful with temps in the high 70’s. The campground is HUGE with many permanent sites and many short time campers like us. Tomorrow we will explore the area and learn more about what southern Florida has to offer.
