Acadia National Park

Yesterday we arrived at the Narrows Too Campground in Trenton, Maine. We have a wonderful site on the water with lots of privacy and a cool breeze to keep the bugs away. We were really amazed at the huge tidal swing going from being able to see no rocks in the water to seeing rocks and no water in the bay. Pretty cool site to see especially as the sun is moving directions in the sky. Today we went to Acadia National Park and explored a few of the trails along the rocky coast of Maine. We went on the Sand Beach Trail which is an easy hike along the coastline with lots of opportunities to climb the rocks that are along the coast. It was lots of fun to climb along the jagged cliffs and rocky shoreline that lead to some pretty dramatic views. Views were much different from the ones we experienced from our recent trip out west.  We took the Ocean Path so we could see the famous spots along the trail (Monument Cove, Thunder Hole, and Otter Cliffs).  Thunder Hole is about halfway through the trail. If the waves and tide are just right, you can hear the signature sound that is like thunder some distance away. There were granite stairs with railings to take you down to the viewing area and we waited there for about 45 minutes but the tide wasn’t right for the sound to be hears. Below the surface of the water at the end of the inlet is a concave space. When the water pulls back, air get into the little cave and is then trapped when the next wave comes crashing in. As the air is forced out, it creates a deep and loud “clap” like sound.

As we continued on the trail we ended up at Otter Cliff where there were lots of people repelling down the cliffs and climbing back up the cliff. There were several instructors teaching others how to do this climb so we watched in amazement (but with no desire to participate). As we finished up the day, we drove up Cadillac Mountain for some pretty views of Bar Harbor below. The scenery was spectacular and we look forward to returning to the park for more hikes and exploration.

A few more pictures for you to enjoy!!
